What’s in a name? While today's speaker hasn’t directly called itself LS-3/5A like the new top version, the play on designation and carefully worded "bears a strong resemblance" shows where Audio Space has set its target. In naming it the AS-3/5A, they threw down the gauntlet conjuring up the ghost of the legendary BBC monitor and setting a daunting standard for themselves. Why would a company with a track record of innovation want to resurrect an aged warhorse design and subject themselves to the intense scrutiny of devoted followers? The continuing lure is what many consider an almost perfect balance of resolution and musicality. In the mid 1970s a small group of BBC engineers managed to create a compact field monitor that did so much right and sounded so unnervingly real that even by today’s standards it’s tough to beat. Tantalizingly good in some respects, obviously limited in others, it became a benchmark that continues to impress fans and inspire generations of talented designers. But there's a catch.36 years of production and evolution have made the LS-3/5A a moving target. Some purists will claim that the only real LS3/5A was the original 15Ω version and that the more amplifier-friendly 11Ω version was already a sonic compromise. If the use of identical parts is a strict parameter, every modern namesake is outta luck because the original KEF drivers have been out of production since 1998. All present-day designs amount to trying to achieve the same objectives by different means. The passage of time has left us with less of a single concrete commodity to emulate but rather a guideline set by the BBC whereby to achieve uniformity and an idea of what the original engineers were trying to accomplish. The LS3/5A has entered the realm of legend and any product hoping to break into the small circle of acceptance must compete against long memory and high expectation.

Non c'è audiofilo che non conosca la storia della BBC Ls 3/5 A, uno dei più grandi successi tecnici e commerciali in campo audio, nel campo dei diffusori acustici. La piccola nasce come monitor per il parlato durante le riprese mobili della BBC, ma presto viene scoperta ed apprezzata dagli audiofili inglesi e di tutto il mondo, per la sua estrema compostezza e neutralità nel porgere il messaggio musicale. Il progetto prevedeva l'uso di due altoparlanti Kef, il mid woofer B 110 ed il tweeter T27. Il crossover e la costruzione del mobile erano rigidamente prefissati dalla BBC che concesse la licenza di costruzione e commercializzazione a diversi produttori, tra i quali Rogers, Spendor, Harbeth e la stessa Kef in seguito. Recentemente è stata reintrodotta sul mercato una replica da parte di Rogers, che, pur mantenendo la stessa sigla , non è esattamente lo stesso modello dell'epoca, essendo gli altoparlanti originali da tempo fuori produzione. Viene commercializzata a 2900 euro utilizzando il marchio Rogers, da tempo assente dal mercato dell'audio essendo stato venduto ad un produttore cinese ed utilizzato per la commercializzazione di prodotti non legati al mondo hi-fi. Mr. Lau,da sempre appassionato del suono e della neutralità della vecchia scuola inglese, decide, su richiesta dell'importatore americano dei suoi prodotti,di proporre la sua personale replica della classica LS 3/5 A. Il risultato è una copia esatta del modello originale, il rispetto del quale si estende, oltre che al mobile ed all'apparenza estetica, soprattutto allo spirito ed alla particolare filosofia sonora. Nasce così la Audiospace ML 3, in Usa commercializzata dal distributore californiano Gini Audio come "Gini LS 3/5 A". In Italia viene commercializzata con il marchio Audiospace. La sigla ML 3 volutamente non fa riferimento, diversamente dal modello USA, alla versione originale, essendo, così come la versione Rogers, una libera reinterpretazione dello storico modello.
