Experienced
listeners know that when enjoying their speaker systems they’re actually hearing
the interaction of the speakers and the room. As sound waves energize the space
they react with each other and the room boundaries in complex ways. It helps to
think of sound like water when considering room acoustics. Sound waves splash to
the corners of the wall behind the speakers and reflect back towards the center
of the wall where they meet themselves out of phase creating “standing waves” of
peaks and nulls emphasizing or sucking out narrow bands of frequencies. Ceiling
and floor reflections plus first reflection points on the side walls between the
speakers and the listening area muddy the direct-arriving sound. This results in
a bloated, confused and opaque soundstage, loss of image focus and precision,
sloppy, boomy bass, a thick impenetrable midrange, and bright, sizzling high
frequencies. These naturally-occurring acoustic phenomena also guarantee the
sound is never the same from one place to the other in your room – thin bass at
one location gives way to overwhelming bass energy in another “masking” higher
frequencies. The lack of transparency and detail leave movie soundtracks
difficult to understand, surround effects less enveloping, while music loses all
dynamics and sparkle. The Furutech Room Diffuser Room Tuning Panels Solution
Furutech offers powerful room correction with lightweight, cost-effective, easy
to place the Furutech Room Diffusers. These elegant, unobtrusive acoustic
devices include mounting hardware for wall and/or ceiling use plus footers for
freestanding mode. Each unit consists of concave and convex “dampers” –
specially designed by Furutech engineers - shaped from Air Foam Polystyrene,
with top, bottom and rear sides in wood. The side panels are plastic and the
pièce de résistance – the outer surface is covered in 100% silk. These are, by a
wide margin, the most domestically acceptable and powerfully effective audio
accessory you may ever own. No Acoustics Engineer Needed! There’s absolutely no
need to cover your walls with tuning panels. Following the classic Rule of
Thirds, at a minimum, place one Furutech Room Diffuser centered on the wall
behind your speakers. A slightly better setup for taming room modes is two
Furutech Room Diffusers, one behind each speaker. But the best way to cure room
modes behind the speakers is using three panels spaced at 1/3rd intervals.
Moving up a level in performance, placing another pair on the walls between the
speakers and the listeners is important for eliminating first reflection points
that confuse the focus at the listening position with secondary wall reflections
arriving milliseconds after the direct sound. Finding the first reflection point
is easy with friend or family assisting. Sit in the listening position and have
your assistant move a mirror held flat against the side walls until the tweeter
of the speaker is reflected in the mirror. That’s the first reflection point,
and the position best treated for startlingly improved sound. Another
significant improvement places an additional Furutech Room Diffuser on the
ceiling in line with the walls’ first reflection points, cleaning up the sound
even more. Finally, one to three Panels can be used on the wall behind the
listener for the ultimate musical and video experience. If you ever doubt that
all this is necessary, just play source material with heavy bass content and
move to the corners of your room behind the speakers. You’ll be amazed at how
the bass “loads up” the closer you move to the rear corners. Or simply walk
about your room clapping your hands and noticing how the sound changes. Do that
again after a Furutech Room Diffuser installation and hear the difference!
