With a single-chassis design,
the N°326S achieves separation of audio circuit, control circuit, and power
supply sections similar to that of the dual-chassis N°32. The internal structure
of the N°326S separates these sections, while a steel shield box protects the
power supply and other circuits against electrostatic and magnetic interference.
Filtered AC power is routed outside audio circuit sections, providing audio
circuits with the quiet, shielded environment essential for superior sound. Like
most high-performance audio components, the N°326S relies on clean, noise-free
AC power to deliver maximum performance. Unfortunately, most AC power does not
meet these standards. Common household appliances such as refrigerators, TVs,
and computers often contaminate AC power lines with line noise, spikes, and
other irregularities that make it difficult for audio circuits to perform up to
their full potential. To compensate for this, the N°326S offers a series of
highly effective noise suppression and isolation techniques that begin filtering
AC power for noise as soon as it enters the chassis. Audio and control circuit
sections use independent power supplies, each with its own low-noise toroidal
transformer. The audio circuit power transformer includes a Faraday shield
between the AC power line and low-voltage secondaries for improved isolation.
Following the Mark Levinson tradition, the N°326S exceeds all reasonable
expectations for a stereo preamplifier. Its flexible design including seven
configurable inputs, separate main and record output connectors and complete
surround sound processor integration allow it to accommodate a wide range of
demands. Additionally, a series of advanced techniques shield the audio circuits,
resulting in an incomparable sound befitting sophisticated music reproduction
systems. Highlights: Seven configurable inputs Maximum channel separation

Power amplification is a
critical component in any high-performance home entertainment system, and its
job is simple but nuanced: to be powerful and versatile enough to drive a wide
range of demanding loudspeakers, yet be able to do so with the forcefulness and
grace that high-quality sound reproduction requires. The Nº 532 exceeds all
expectations, offering breathtaking sound quality and featuring two impressive
400-watt monaural power amplifiers housed in a single chassis. The Nº 532’s
meticulous craftsmanship is evident in the uniquely engineered design. To create
the optimum power delivery system, the chassis of the Nº 532 is specially
designed to isolate the audio circuits from interference and noise. When viewed
from above, the rear portion of the power amplifier has three distinct piers.
Control and power circuitry reside in the center pier, separate from the audio
circuitry, which resides in the two outer piers – one dedicated to each channel.
The power transformers are located at the front of the chassis, away from the
audio circuits. This unusual design provides a number of important advantages –
isolation of the potentially noisy power and control circuits from the delicate
audio circuits, additional heat sink surface area for cooling, and very short
signal and power delivery paths.Additionally, special care was taken in the
design and implementation of the voltage regulator circuitry. Multiple stages of
regulator circuits are employed, using a combination of series and shunt
elements, custom-tailored to the audio circuitry for which they provide power.
These discrete, low-noise, wide-bandwidth circuits are in close proximity to the
audio signal path they power, but placed on a separate circuit board to minimize
interaction with the audio signals and prevent corruption of low-level signals.
The result is higher resolution, better bass definition, greater focus and more
precise dynamic control. Similarly extraordinary measures were taken with the
design of the toroidal power transformers, which filter mains-born noise from
the secondary power supply and help ensure any capacitance that normally exists
between the windings is knocked down to prevent it from finding its way into the
delicate audio circuits. The power supplies are placed very close together to
maximize magnetic field cancellation, and as far away from the audio signal path
as possible to further reduce the potential for interference. The compact design
of the Nº 532’s circuitry allows the signal path to be tighter and shorter,
reducing parasitic capacitances and minimizing propagation delay and phase shift.
The end result is a faster, wider bandwidth and a cleaner output signal with
very low impedance level and minimal signal degradation. Lastly, the audio
signal output path contains 24 output devices per channel, providing an
impressive power capability while minimizing crossover distortion. The first
non-Reference Mark Levinson amplifier to be fully differential, the Nº 532
provides both RCA and XLR connectors that accept balanced signals directly into
the input stage of the amplifier with no additional circuitry. Also, it is the
first Mark Levinson linear amplifier to incorporate through-hole parts
specifically for critical signal-path components and surface-mount components
for building smaller circuits with higher performance. With the recent evolution
of semiconductors, it is now possible to build more compact circuits, and obtain
better transient response with greater stability and enhance immunity from noise
sources. As music and cinema systems continue to grow more complex, integrating
individual components takes on greater importance. To address the increasing
demand for more control and communications capabilities, the Nº 532 features
Mark Levinson’s proprietary ML Net and Link2 inter-device communication
protocols, allowing the Nº 532 to be easily integrated and controlled by other
Mark Levinson devices. The Nº 532 also provides a traditional 12V trigger input
and output to synchronize on/standby status with other devices that do not
include ML Net or Link2. An RS-232 port also allows the Nº 532 to be controlled
by units from industry leaders such as AMX™, Crestron® and other third party
integrated

As with all Mark Levinson
Reference products, it goes without saying that the primary function of the Nº53
is to reproduce sound at the purest level possible. Following in the tradition
of such Mark Levinson solid state power amplifier products as the ML-2 and the
Nº33, the new Nº53 continues to prove that solid state electronics can rival the
best sounding tube-based designs. More specifically, the Nº53 is the first ever
switching power amplifier from Mark Levinson. Despite their numerous advantages
– increased efficiency, more power, compact dimensions, decreased weight and
less heat dissipation than their linear counterparts – switching power
amplifiers have generally been viewed with skepticism from the audiophile
community due to the technical limitations inherent in switching designs and
assumptions about the resulting sound quality. The Nº53, however, is the end
result of an extensive R&D effort to find ways to emphasize the advantages of
switching power amplifiers while overcoming their weaknesses, creating a
landmark product truly worthy of the Mark Levinson Reference designation. The
Nº53 is rated at an impressive 500 Watts into 8 Ohms, measures merely 21" H × 9"
W × 21" D and weighs only 135 lbs — certainly playing up the strengths for which
switching power amplifiers are known. It is capable of generating phenomenal
power levels into virtually any speaker load to support both instantaneous and
continuous demands. More impressive still, the Nº53 accomplishes this feat
without the slightest change in performance capability while maintaining a
constant, thermally-balanced operating temperature. Unlike most switching
amplifiers, the Nº53 has superbly efficient power management capabilities, so
its operating temperature does not change no matter how hard or long the
amplifier is driven.Switching power amplifiers are so named because they switch
the output devices on and off in very rapid succession, mimicking the input
signal. One set of output devices drives the positive half of the waveform, and
a separate set drives the negative half. The result is less power being wasted
as heat, because the workload is essentially cut in half. Unfortunately, it also
creates some significant design challenges in terms of how to manage the
switching noise – the noise created from the output devices constantly turning
on and off – as well as a phenomenon called “dead bands.” Traditionally, these
have been the two contributing factors to switching power amplifiers’ reputation
for inferior sound quality. However, Mark Levinson has raised the bar by
breaking through these barriers with the Nº53.The Nº53 removes switching noise
without affecting the audio with the introduction of the new patented and
proprietary Interleaved Power Technology (IPT) which, among other things, raises
the switching frequency of the Nº53 to an extremely high 2MHz. The advantages of
this are twofold: First, it pushes the fundamental switching noise and its
harmonics far above the limit of human hearing, so that they have no direct
affect on sound quality; second, it allows for easier removal of the switching
noise from the signal by using much gentler filters, having no negative effect
in the crucial audio band. The result is a frequency response that is ruler flat
across the entire audio spectrum and is only a few dB down at 100kHz –
impressive for any power amplifier, but staggering for a switching design. The
Nº53 has also overcome the “dead band” problem. Dead bands are silent gaps in
the audio output, created when the output devices driving the positive half of
the signal and the negative half of the signal are both turned off. This
generally occurs at every “zero crossing point,” whenever the audio waveform
crosses over from positive amplitude to negative amplitude or vice versa. This
is a constant phenomenon – in a 20kHz audio signal, this point occurs 40,000
times per second. It becomes a problem, however, because even the best output
devices are not able to turn on and off instantaneously, so the result is a
number of “dead bands” of signal every second. Obviously, the larger the gap,
the more detrimental to the audio signal. Many designs minimize dead bands by
ensuring that both output devices are off for as brief a period as possible.
Unfortunately, this increases the potential for the output devices to be on
simultaneously, which can damage or destroy them. The Nº53, on the other hand,
was designed using a patented technology that allows both sets of output devices
to be on simultaneously for short periods of time, to completely eliminate dead
bands without damaging the output devices or reducing their life expectancy. In
other words, this solves the dead band problem and maintains the Nº53’s
long-term reliability.Power amplifiers’ challenge and goal is to amplify the
incoming audio signal without distorting it and effortlessly drive a wide range
of loudspeaker impedances at any volume level with the forcefulness and grace
that reference-quality sound reproduction demands. The Nº53 is designed toward
that end. The chassis is a compact vertical design consisting of three separate
internal compartments to provide shielding and isolation of the different
circuitry – the power supply in the bottom, the four amplifiers in the middle
and the control circuitry in the top. The power supply is completely isolated
and shielded from the rest of the amplifier to reduce interference from magnetic
fields and high current devices. The extremely low-noise toroidal transformer
features an oversized 2.8kVA transformer with four 47,000µF low-ESR capacitors.
The middle section’s four amplifiers, featuring a pair of coils each, are
arranged symmetrically and mirror-imaged to maintain separation. Working
together, the four amplifiers raise the effective switching frequency from
500kHz to 2MHz to produce the best sound quality known from a switching
amplifier. The control circuitry has its own independent regulated power supply
and is shielded from the rest of the amplifier to keep it from interfering with
the audio circuits

Building upon their legacy of
cutting-edge disc transports, digital-to-analog (DAC) converters and analog
audio design, Mark Levinson engineers have created a CD player that brings new
life and enjoyment to your CD collection. The Nº 512 represents the state of the
art in CD playback. Its breathtaking transparency and detail reveal more than
you ever knew your CDs contained. Further, the Nº 512 offers the finest in
two-channel SACD playback for even greater dynamic range and natural sound.
Thousands of SACD titles have been released, allowing audiophiles an even better
musical experience. The Nº 512 extracts the most from both CDs and SACDs,
allowing you to rediscover your CD collection and to enjoy even greater musical
fidelity on SACD.Audio engineers know that jitter – time-based errors in a
digital signal – can have significant detrimental effects on sound quality. In
severe cases, jitter can cause players to output loud clicks during the music,
immediately ending any illusion of a live performance. But even small amounts of
jitter are audible, and jitter is present to at least some degree in every
digital device. How it is managed or minimized varies widely. In the Nº 512 ,
Mark Levinson engineers devised a proprietary anti-jitter technique employing a
memory buffer and a Direct Digital Synthesis (DDS) circuit. After the transport
reads and decodes the digital steam, it is sent to a memory bank that stores it
temporarily. The DDS circuit then accurately reclocks the output of the memory
bank. By placing a buffer between the player’s transport and the rest of the
digital circuitry and reclocking the signal, any jitter introduced by the
transport itself is effectively removed, and the remainder of the digital path
is slaved to the master clock. This ensures jitter is kept to a minimum, and
that only one clock controls the internal timing of digital signals.A critical
design element in any digital device is the digital-to-analog (D/A) conversion
process. In the Nº 512 , extremely high-quality 24-bit D/A converters in
differential or dual mode are used. In other words, each channel utilizes two
D/A converters instead of one. This is a more costly design solution, but it
yields significantly better signal-to-noise ratio and dynamic range, revealing
more of the music playing through the device. In addition, the D/A converters
themselves are equipped to convert audio with Direct StreamDigital™ (DSD)
encoding from Super Audio CDs in the native format, avoiding any degradation
that could be caused by converting the signal to accommodate D/A converters that
are not DSD capable. By avoiding this conversion step, the analog output much
more closely matches the original signal on the disc. Additionally the DAC PCB
is built on six-layer, high-speed Nelco® N4000-13 SI laminate for increased
audio purity and sonic fidelity. To preserve the purity of audio output, the Nº
512 has two separate power supplies with independent, custom-designed,
high-quality toroidal transformers. One power supply is dedicated to the digital
circuitry and the other to the analog circuitry. Having completely independent
power supplies safely isolates the delicate analog circuits from any potential
noise or interference generated by the digital circuits, which would be
detrimental to audio quality. Mark Levinson engineers have also completely
enclosed the analog output board in a separate metal sub enclosure, and
physically placed inherently noisy components as far away from it as possible.
The analog signal is available on balanced or unbalanced outputs. There are also
AES and S/PDIF digital outputs for sending PCM digital signals from conventional
CDs to other devices. In addition, the Nº 512 features a metal loader assembly
for greater durability. The Nº 512 was designed for use in systems in which it
can be connected to a preamplifier, or directly to the power amplifier(s) if it
is the only system source. Although a direct connection precludes the
convenience of the source switching offered by most preamplifiers, it eliminates
one component (and the possible degradation it can cause) from the audio path. A
heavy-duty metal remote control that provides a full complement of controls is
included. The Nº 512 also includes several other options for control, including
RS-232, Link2 and MLNet. RS-232 is compatible with third-party controllers, such
as those available from Crestron Electronics, Inc. And the Link2 and MLNet
protocols facilitate communication with other compatible Mark Levinson
products. The Nº 512 is the first dedicated high-resolution playback source

The Sound Mark Levinson
products have always been highly regarded for their sound quality and the N°502
is no exception. Towards that end, every part of the audio path from the input
to output was carefully considered and designed to ensure optimal sound quality.
Mark Levinson engineers designed the chassis to double as an integrated radio
frequency (RF) shield providing immunity from the RF emissions commonly radiated
by other devices. These emissions are a common source of noise that can find its
way into the sensitive audio circuits and degrade sound quality. Noise can also
enter a system through the input and output connectors which are usually
connected directly to the chassis, providing a direct path for noise to get in.
To prevent this from occurring in the N°502, the input and output connectors are
physically isolated from the chassis. Inside the chassis, the N°502 utilizes two
AC power transformers to completely isolate the digital and analog signal paths.
A digital power transformer is used to power the digital circuits, and a
toroidal power transformer is used to power the analog circuits. In addition,
both power supplies are carefully shielded in a chamber inside the chassis to
further prevent transformer noise from leaking into the delicate analog circuits
and degrading sound quality. Another method employed to reduce noise is the use
of eighteen-layer circuit boards with minimal surface etches. They help to lower
radiated emissions from inside the chassis. We also isolate the control signals
from the audio signals to eliminate interference. In the event that any common
mode noise is present inside the system, all of the analog audio signals are
routed inside the chassis as differential (balanced) signals to cancel this
noise out.To reduce jitter and digital noise, a specially designed low-voltage
differential signaling circuit is utilized. A proprietary direct digital
synthesizer frequency lock loop controls the audio master clock resulting in
extraordinary jitter performance. This closed-loop control algorithm improves
bandwidth and resolution. Great care was also taken in the implementation of the
level controls for the N°502 which offer an adjustment range of 120dB,
preserving the full resolution of the signal. In order to reduce noise and
distortion, fewer passive components were employed, and digital quantization
noise is exceptionally low, even at the lowest volume settings. This ensures
that the level controls do not significantly degrade the sound of the audio
passing through them — a common problem in many other less-rigorous designs. The
N°502 features Harman International’s proprietary Logic7 technology in addition
to the standard suite of Dolby and DTS listening modes. Logic 7 is widely
regarded in the industry as the best surround-sound process available. In simple
terms, Logic7 works by utilizing a unique algorithm that engages all of the
speakers in a system to enhance the realism of the sound. By analyzing the
spatial cues included in the original sound, Logic7 presents them in a manner
that makes the overall experience much more engaging and enveloping. Another
notable feature is the N°502’s bass management system which utilizes
phase-matched signal paths to prevent signal cancellation. Whenever two signals
combine, as occurs in all bass management systems, the potential for signal
cancellation increases, which will significantly alter the sound. By phase
matching the signal path, the N°502 ensures that you hear every detail as it was
intended, regardless of the speaker configuration. The Picture Although Mark
Levinson products are known for their superior sound quality, the N°502 also
establishes a new benchmark for picture quality. In addition to providing an
array of analog and High-Definition Multimedia Interface (HDMI) inputs and
outputs, the N°502 also includes a state-of-the-art video processor that can
convert all of the inputs into a single output and scale them to the optimum
resolution for driving the display device. This simplifies the overall system
configuration while providing the absolute best picture quality possible. To
clean up and sharpen compressed images from sources such as standard DVD and
satellite/cable TV broadcasts, the N°502 includes advanced noise reduction and
detail enhancement. Combined with the built-in scaler, standard-definition
sources look like true high-definition sources. The N°502 also includes
motion-adaptive video de-interlacing with edge interpolation for improving both
standard-definition and high-definition sources. And for the highest quality
video sources currently available today, the N°502 readily handles 1080p/24Hz
video inputs and outputs with ease. The N°502 features an impressive six HDMI
inputs, each with its own receiver to deliver exceptionally fast HDMI switching
and the ability to “preview” one HDMI input while watching another. It also
features two HDMI outputs, so it can alternately drive two different displays.
Combined with impressive video processing capabilities, the N°502 sets a new
standard for picture quality, even when compared to dedicated, stand-alone
processors.N°502 Video Board Twin Gennum VXP 10-bit broadcast quality processors
for 7.8 gigaflops of processing power. ZBC technology allows the power and
ground planes to act as a distributed capacitor which functions much better at
high frequencies than conventional bypass capacitors. This reduces radiated
emissions and helps to lower the overall noise in the system.Eighteen-layer PCB
allows more of the signals to be routed on internal layers. When signals are
routed between ground and power layers, they are effectively shielded and
radiate considerably less. This significantly enhances video signal to noise. The
Experience Perhaps the most unexpected aspect of the N°502 is the impressive
graphical user interface (GUI). Utilizing a separate graphics engine with
bit-accurate graphics for all output resolutions, setting up and using the N°502
is an absolute joy.Set-up can be accomplished using the remote control and
screen in the theater or by using the buttons and the screen on the front panel.
The GUI on both is the same, so if you can’t access the screen in the theater
for whatever reason, you can still use the front panel and benefit from the same
beautiful GUI. This is essential for systems where the N°502 is located
out-of-sight from the screen in the theater. It also facilitates easier
configuration of other components connected to the N°502 that also utilize
on-screen menus for setup. The hierarchal structure of the menus makes it easy to
navigate and further simplify its use. Each screen displays a menu system at all
times. Controls are duplicated on both the remote control and the front panel,
so access is convenient whether the N°502 is within reach or out-of-sight. All
custom setup features are stored, and the custom configuration can even be saved
to a personal computer through an Ethernet port for additional peace of mind. The
N°502 is equipped with a state-of-the-art auto calibration system that
accurately calculates speaker distances, output levels and full room
equalization in less than ten minutes. Automatic calibration is available for
every speaker configuration and improves sound quality by removing the
interference of sound reflections that are caused by the room itself. These
reflections, or room modes, can be detrimental to your listening experience by
making the sound appear too loud or too soft at various frequencies and cause
lingering resonances which mask the finer details in the sound. The N°502 room
equalization effectively eliminates these room modes and makes the entire
system, including the room itself, sound more neutral and true to the original
recording.Once set up, the N°502 is a breeze to use. Day-to-day controls are
kept separate from set-up controls and all you need to do is select an activity
such as; “Watch a Film,” “Listen to Music,” or “Watch TV” and adjust the volume.
Each activity automatically loads a speaker configuration, an audio profile and
a video profile. This allows the N°502 to essentially reconfigure itself
automatically to provide the desired listening and viewing experience for each
and every activity.Control of the N°502 is accomplished in a number of different
ways. There is the backlit, metal remote control, which feels both substantial
and elegant in your hand and features a minimal number of buttons for maximum
user-friendliness. There are the front-panel controls for when you are within
reach of the N°502. But perhaps the most extensive way to control the N°502 is
by utilizing its RS-232 port in conjunction with a third party controller, such
as those available from Crestron or AMX. This allows true two-way control of the
N°502 and if the control system also has video input capability, the ability to
send the picture that is normally displayed on the front panel of the N°502
directly into the control system. This puts the GUI of the N°502 and the preview
feature right into the touch-screen controller itself, making these features
accessible wherever the controller is. In addition, the N°502 includes a
proprietary Mark Levinson protocol called ML Net which utilizes Ethernet to
provide additional functions when other ML Net equipped devices are connected to
the N°502.The Final Word The N°502 is a remarkably powerful and flexible media
console for the ultimate home entertainment system and is designed in every
detail to provide the absolute best in film and music reproduction. It is this
meticulous attention to detail that makes a Mark Levinson product stand above
the rest. It sets a new standard for audio and video performance, control and
flexibility in a single chassis design. Using only the finest materials and
parts, the N°502 honors the Mark Levinson tradition and is sure to satisfy even
the most demanding enthusiast.
